Macano is Margarita, al natural

Dry nature, solitary and virgin beaches, emblematic birds and ancient traditions are part of our trip to the villages, mountains, valleys and beaches of Macanao.

A beautiful peninsula that allows us to get to know now the live on Margarita island as it was before. The bridge that communicates the eastern part with the rest of the island was built only in 1963 and until this year, Macanao was isolated from the changes the western part of Margarita experienced.

To get to Macanao drive from Porlamar on the road to the east (airport – Punta de Piedras), taking the exit to the north at the sign La Restinga – Boca de Río, its main village, where you can visit the museum Marino, located at the entrance of the village.

A collection of skeletons of marine mammals and fish are exhibited there as well as a variety of shells from the Caribbean and other seas in the world.

Once in Macanao, you can enter in contact with the nature, observe wild life and enjoy solitary beaches. A line of hills that run through the peninsula from east to west and enclose the valley of San Francisco dominates the dry landscape. The villages San Francisco, Boca de Río, Boca de Pozo, Robledal y el Tunal, austere as the landscape, survive principally from fishing and sand extraction.

In Macanao you will have the opportunity to match typical birds form dry climates, like the emblematical Cotorra Margariteña, a parrot, that crosses at sunset in large flocks to the valley where they spend the night. The Cardinal, intensely red, competes in brightness of colour with the fruit of the melon cactus known as Pichigüey, and the yellow-orange of the Turpial shows a beauty that rivals with the spectacular sunsets on Macanao beaches

A paved road leads from Boca de Rio to Punta Arenas, a Caribbean Beach with tranquil and clear water and sand full of live; hermit crabs and starfish. Boarding the coast your reach Boca de Pozo and Robledal, typical fisher villages where you can observe boat builders at work and Playa La Pared on the north. If you drive a 4-wheel drive, you may adventure to discover beaches like El Faro, La Mula and La Auyama.
